These sculptures, called Byeri, were associated with baskets containing ancestral relics. Their function was to watch over these sacred remains and to ensure the symbolic protection of the lineage.
Fang reliquary figures are characterized by stylized forms, a marked frontality, and powerful modeling. The elongated face, concentrated gaze, and balanced structure attest to the unique aesthetic of Fang sculpture.
