This Fang Okak statue is a ritual work connected to the spiritual traditions of the Fang people, present in Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Cameroon.
These sculptures were associated with ancestor worship and accompanied the byeri reliquaries, which were intended to house the relics of prominent clan members. They embodied the protective presence of ancestors and served as intermediaries between the visible and spiritual worlds.
The frontal posture, slender proportions, and carved details demonstrate great artistic mastery and strong symbolic significance.
Today, these statues are recognized as major works of traditional Central African art, appreciated for their aesthetic and spiritual power.
