This ritual “Disease” mask is a unique variation on the theme of human duality. Smaller but just as powerful as the first mask, it is distinguished by its refined forms and balanced volumes.
Carved from wood and enhanced with natural pigments, this mask embodies a strong symbolism: the fragility of man in the face of illness and the constant search for balance between body and mind.
🌍 Origin and meaning
In the traditions of Central Africa (Congo, Gabon), so-called “disease masks” were used for:
to remember the precariousness of life and the need to remain in harmony with invisible forces,
to remove the spirits responsible for the evils,
to support the community's healing and protection rituals.
This more understated mask, with an oval face and marked by a stylized mouth and nose, reinforces the idea of silence and contemplation, an essential step in the spiritual healing process.
