This Pounou mask from Gabon is a masterpiece of traditional African art.

The Punu, a Bantu people mainly located in southern Gabon, are renowned for their funerary masks with whitened faces, called okuyi. These masks, covered in white kaolin, symbolize purity, spirituality, and the world of the ancestors.

Used in funeral ceremonies and ritual dances, the Pounou mask played a mediating role between the living and the spirits. Its delicate features, half-closed eyes, and frontal scarifications evoke the search for balance, beauty, and serenity.
