In the Lega societies of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, masks play an important role in the Bwami initiatory traditions, a social and spiritual institution structured around the transmission of knowledge and moral values.
These objects were used during initiation rituals and served as visual aids to teach ethical principles, social hierarchy, and notions of wisdom within the community.
This mask features an oval shape with refined features, characteristic of Lega aesthetics. The calm expression of the face and the stylization of the lines reflect a search for balance and sobriety in the representation.
The presence of plant fibers associated with the wood carving testifies to the ritual practices in which these objects were integrated, as well as the importance of natural materials in the artistic traditions of the region.
